Windows for widows
About 50 million widows are begging on the streets of India, thrown out by their own children.
Give these widows a future
Although we mainly focus on orphans, we are also faced with the desperate need of the elderly and especially the widows in India. There are roughly 50 million widows roaming on the streets of India, because they are considered to be a curse to society. In the past a widow was burnt alive with her dead husband. This practice is slowly disappearing, but the new style is that they kick her out of the door. After the death of her husband, she becomes literally and outcast, roaming the streets, begging for food and devoid of all love and care. They are an easy prey for prostitution and organtrading. Most of these old women die a miserale death within 5 or 6 years.

Although our concern is especially focussed on the children, we suddenly saw a golden opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Because if we provide a home for these widows on top of our childrenhome, they have a happy live, where they again have children from whom they receive love and those children have sweet old granies that give them love. So these kids get a grandmother who loves them and these old women have children to give them love.
We have seen already how much this interaction brings healing for both parties, because have been deeply traumatized by the fate that befell them. An advantage is, that these widows, if they are still healthy, may happily help with cooking, washing and caring and giving love and attention to the children. It brings healing to both of them. You should see the wonderful relationships that occur between these orphans and widows. It is just touching and heartwarming to see.
And so we planned to build eldery appartments on top of our childrenhome in Chennai. We have space for about 40 widows and the cost it is about € 50,000,- The cost of care for a widow is €30,- per month. These are higher than for the children because they often need extra medical care. If you are touched and want to donate one of these widows ..? Click here.
